linux vs win: Rant 2er Script/gelehrter
-.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.- -.-. --.-
nachgerade vernichtend.
Absolviert auf der Liste der DefCon Hacker, einem Peripatos,
wo Dekonstruktion als re-compiling selbverständlich ist.
Während im Peripatos [Säulengang - wörtlich: peri = herum;

Well, certain of the haxorly inclined did have Suns and
Apollos in their garrets.
At some point, the cost of low-end Sun became quite
competitive with high-end PC + full development software to
equal the usual Unix bundle. This point was unremarked by
the marketplace, though, and especially by M$-whoring
mags like "PC World".
It's the fundamental curse of our times: Microsoft is a
fantastic corporation, with brilliant management. Their only
shortcoming is that they don't know shit about operating
systems or application software. Everything else, brilliant.
It's a miracle, like discovering that the Yugo is "Car of the
Century".

I agree. The word "desktop" means "interactive" (i.e. dumb
terminal) to me, but "standalone box" to you.
I ran Unix on a 286 PC, actually. Microport Sys VR2. It
really sucked. (Circa 1986).
A way to bring Linux to every home in the moneyed world:
*) Do your improvements (which boil down to plug and
play) (I consider any Unix/Linux installation to be easier than
any Windoze one, and that it has been that way for years.
Reason: "A windoze installation never ends"... it requires
endless tweaking, often reinstallation.)
*) Market a righteous X terminal at a $250 retail, that
would network over power lines. (Or some other wireless
LAN. Details irrelevant).
*) Software: multiplayer games, and for the paranoid, all
kinds of snoopy-ware to make sure than Heather and Cody
aren't looking at any pr0n.
*) Embed the OS in ROM, on something idiot-proof
pluggable like PCMCIA.

I don't accuse you of it. My thesis is that the *form* of the
most common "nasty" M$ attack is the virus, for the same
reason that the Slim Jim is the most common attack on car
door locks.
If Unix were as widespread as M$, there would be more
attacks against it.
Actually the gaping hole in Unix is probably X. X has many
of the swiss-cheese features of Windoze -- resulting from
being designed for an open environment free of malice, and
then having security shoe-horned in, under and around it later
on.

True. If rabbits weren't a problem, there wouldn't be foxes
and .22 rifles.

Oh, I'm not jihading. If someone takes it that way, that's an
error.
